FrieslandCampina’s new Innovation Centre, Netherlands, by Fokkema & Partners

Queen Maxima of the Netherlands recently opened FrieslandCampina’s new Innovation Centre in Wageningen. This state of the art complex brings together various laboratories, a "Technohal", and several different research disciplines. The furnishing of the laboratory was done using Corian^®.

Hygiene a priority

"In that case, Corian^® is the ultimate material" said Edward de Vette, Director of S+B Rotterdam, a supplier of interior design concepts for schools and laboratories. "The product is extremely hygienic. The surface is sealed and resistant to most chemicals and bacteria. It can be worked in all possible shapes and sizes without any joints or seams. It is not cold and feels incredibly soft and smooth to touch. And, as a result, it has a fantastic designer look."

Seamlessly incorporated

Helga Boks, architect at Fokkema & Partners, the architects responsible for the interior, said: "In laboratories, people often choose a purely functional solution, such as work surfaces from Trespa. But that lacks a certain appeal. In the Innovation Centre, you can look into all the rooms and so we wanted an attractive solution, a design that would radiate calm within the transparent character of the building." The final design for the laboratory tables came about through very close collaboration between the architect, the interior designer and the client. S+B produced around 50 tables from Corian^®. As a result, the universal connections for gas and electricity were completely and seamlessly integrated for optimal hygienic conditions.

The lab tables were produced in Glacier White, while the edging for the different departments was done in various colours from the striking colour palette of FrieslandCampina – green, yellow, red, orange and blue in Corian^®.
